This is down to the word of mouth referrals that we are always delighted to get. Most BMW alloys are 18" plus in size and many have specialist finishes or awkward spokes to deal with. Any type of wheel scuff or scrape corrosion can be repaired by us, usually with our mobile smart repair process but ocassionally requiring a trip to one of our car body repair shops.

The customer brought his pride and joy Jaguar to us after having damaged and neglected the four wheels for a long period of time. There was heavy curb damage and corrosion on all four alloys and the only option was a full wheel refurbishment.

We started by removing the wheels from the car, this was definitely not a mobile job – we estimated 6 hours to repair them and were not far out (about five and a quarter total). The valves are removed and the air is let out of the tyres.

We then break the bead on all of the rims and apply a mask to the tyre, leaving as much of the wheel exposed as possible to get the deep damage out with the sander.

A dual action mini sander was used with the initial grade being 80 grit for these wheels (which is very harsh). Moving up through 180, 240, 400 and finally 1000 grit, the wheels were looking and feeling a massive amount smoother and were ready for the painting.

A prep fluid is used on the wheels to clean off the dirt and grease that is left and to provide a good surface for the primer to adhere to. An etching primer is used to ensure that it sticks to the bare metal – any other primer used here would not last and the paint would begin to flake off pretty rapidly.

The primer is cured using infra red heat lamps and then flatted with 1200 wet and dry paper to keep the surface smooth. The correct water based paint is then applied in two coats and is dried with a hot air gun. The final wet painting stage is the clear coat lacquer. A two pack automotive lacquer is used, in this case a Standox lacquer to give a shiny and hard finish. Again, two coats are applied and the wheels are then left for an hour to fully cure under an infra red lamp.

The final stages are to reinflate the tyres, put the wheels back on the car and hand the keys back to another happy customer.

The damage is sanded away with an 80 grit sandpaper on a da sander and then progressively higher grade sandpaper is used up to 1200 wet and dry paper.

The repairs completed, all that is left is to polish the wheels back to a mirror finish. A 2000 grit abralon pad is used and then a 4000 pad to remove any visible scratches. An orbital machine polisher is then used with a series of three progressively finer polishing heads and polish.  The final result is a perfectly invisible repair.

The M3 wheels are originally a highly polished finish with no paint and they often suffer from very bad corrosion of the clear coat finish. The kerb damage only made things worse:

The first step is to remove the wheels from the car. We let the air out of the tyres and then break the bead of the tyre to allow easier access to the rims.

The damaged areas are sanded with a dual action sander and the clearcoat is removed from the rest of the wheel.

The four wheels are masked off and then a coat of self etching primer is applied to provide a secure basecoat for the paint. We mix the paint – Anthracite Grey – a fairly dark grey with lots of metallic flake in to make the wheels sparkle. After thoroughly drying the two coats applied, the wheels are finally covered in two coats of lacquer and cured under an infra red light. A final polish and the wheels are completed for another happy customer.

A car's paint has to deal with a lot of challenges, both from the environment and from human interaction:

• Road muck and grime
• Bird dropppings and tree sap
  
• Tar
• Water spots
• Brushing against the car with clothing or bags
• Poor valeting or machine polishing techniques and products
• Automatic car washes

All of these things leave the finish of a car looking dull, faded and covered in light scratches, swirls and other marks. This reduces the value of the vehicle and significantly detracts from its aesthetic appearance.

Paint correction really can make a substantial difference and will completely remove or significantly reduce most marks. The resulting finish will have an amazing gloss, depth of reflection and slickness.
